Birth of the Getting Started Project: Wrestling Practise

Why did I decide to get started with an SLR?

Bought a Coolpix P500 and hoped to be able to get started with photography that way. Took these photos at the gym last week (or the week before) and didn't like them.

I know I'm still learning but I felt I needed an SLR as a minimum. The “Getting Started” project was born.

PROJECT:
Take a newbie (me) that has no idea how to take photographs. Next, grab an entry level Nikon d3100 with 18-55VR stock lens and set both to full manual. Then, try to take photographs and have the end result resemble what was in my mind when I clicked the button.

These are great! You don't come across as a newbie at all. The tones are perfect and you composed the shots beautifully. Nice! :)

For a newbie you sure know how to capture a moment and present it! Very nicely done!

For me works the last image best - I like this portrait very much.
And you have my admiration, I don´t have a SRL camera, can only imagine how hard it must be to start shooting with it.

I wonder why you didn't like these shots. I think it's a really difficult subject and you did very well. Composition is very important to me, which is why I would pick out #4 for the additional figures to the right which add a lot of interest. (At first I thought they were a mirror reflection)
I would be interested to see what you do with the DSLR in the same place.
