On the road in Madhya Pradesh

After this town I was heading off in some comparatively wild territory for about 150kms. There were two roads that I was willing to choose between but everyone else wanted me to take neither of them. Although further, they wanted me to take the highway. As highways are so unpleasant - at best they are fairly boring - I was adamant that I wasn't going that way. So when it was between the two alternatives, apparently shorter but wilder, I let an army or police lieutenant talk me out of taking one of the roads. He said the tribal people would rob me. The mainstream is very afraid of the tribal peoples. Actually, I think its they who probably have more reason to be afraid… but anyway, he said the road was very bad and I suspect it was, as the road I did choose was also quite bad.

One of the lovelier little stretches of road I found, especially around these parts.

The prize for the biggest horns goes to this person.

So this is the lovely place where I stopped for lunch. For company…

I had caught the attention of the shorter boy in the middle and a bunch of his school friends. He first caught my eye, er ear, when I first caught his. "What is the meaing of this?" he exclaimed, somewhat tongue in cheek. I did my best to explain myself and for once, it was easy as these boys go to English school and spoke excellent English.
