Waiting for Mama

More (for camera buffs):
One new thing I learnt that this camera can do, which I find fascinating but a little annoying too,- although i can see its potential - is that it chooses for me when to go into continuous mode and when to shoot a single shot. An old film camera could never do anything that tricky.

To decide whether to shoot one or six shots, the sensor detects movement in the subject. When that happens, the camera refocuses between each shot and keeps firing.

I think it also detects the fact that I move and reacts the same way.

Hence you end up with a better chance of a sharper shot.

But you also end up burning through your memory so I think the idea is to figure out which one is sharpest and best and delete the rest as soon as possible. I'm not sure that is going to be very practical for me. Time will tell I guess.

There are other ways to control whether there is continuous shooting or one shot but I won't go into that as they are fairly standard methods.

This is one of the first shots taken on my new 40D canon. I could not have taken this shot with my little compact digital canon. Notice the tiny depth of field. That was chosen for me with the camera on auto. I probably would have chosen a slightly different approach if I wasn't on auto but this afternoon I was keen just to snap off a few shots too see how nice the lens is. This little dog belongs to one of our neighbours, but I am not sure which one. He comes and wait for her to come up the road from work apparently - I heard people discussing this the other day. He's quite a sweetie. I think the animals are going to be very helpful for me learning my way around this gadget….

get bigger memory cards and several of them, (get a spare battery while you're at it if you haven't already.)

I find it hard to judge a shot on the tiny screen on a camera so often would rather download and then choose.

By all means practice on the animals, I'll enjoy it greatly.
