Peru Day 3: Gocta Falls - Don't Turn Your Back...

Lucky me, on this trip I experienced another waterfall. At least this time I had no "fall to grace" lessons. Nope, think I learned that. Instead I accepted help when offered and used a horse to return down the mountain. My legs thanked me for that. But to hear that some tourists months earlier turned their back to the waterfall for a selfie and fell 750 feet, that wasn't exactly the start I needed to hear. Yet, it was a stern warning from the universe: "Don't play games. Be responsible and respect mother earth." Noted (insert thumbs up emoji here).

Fun facts: Gocta is considered the third highest waterfall in the world. Legend has it, a local woman (who died two years ago) lost her husband to the seduction of a mermaid. Every so often, he'd come home with expensive gifts and riches. Growing suspicious of her husband's new found gifts, she followed him one day. She found him with a mermaid engaged in a rendezvous. When it was discovered the wife witnessed them together, he and the mermaid disappeared. She never saw her husband again. Interesting...

This hike is a steady incline of 5M or roughly 2-2.5 miles. Oh goodness... after having no rest from the day before, my legs were so angry at me. oh well. loll

At one time this area was the Amazon sea... its not unusual to see fossils of former sea life.
