Although St Albans School is in the earthquake zone in Christchurch, it was decided the kids had been through enough without having to focus on the earthquake for their mask project. Their teacher felt mask-making was a “really special” opportunity for them and she wanted them to “escape” the earthquakes so the class looked at making carnival/mardi gras masks. Carnivale was originally intended as the people's escape from harsh realities and, reportedly, the kids absolutely loved it and are extremely proud of their work. Here are some of the masks from this series.
