The world flocked to Ballarat in the 1850s in search for gold. By 1860, Ballarat was an ornament to the golden wealth it produced, its streets lined with some of the finest buildings in the colony. Many of these buildings survive to this day, oozing with the splendour of the past.

The railway station, built in 1862, features and arched train entrance and Tuscan pillasters.
