Out of Africa: The Big 5 - 4 Down 1 to Go

That grey, wrinkly close up in the previous set is the side of an elephant! We were that close to the behemoth. The lion hunt was off because two massive elephants walked down the road and the vehicles were scrambling to get out of the way which is why the pickup practically ran over the lion, unseen to the pick up driver who came from the far side of the bush.

I have to tell you, seeing an elephant up close in the wild is an absolutely indescribable experience. Last year at Pilanesberg, on my own, I surprised an elephant behind a bush and he chased me about a mile down the road while I drove in reverse! These guys were pretty calm and just nonchalantly lumbered by. Elephant were my son's favorite animal growing up, so I was so exited that he got to experience this. Little did I know that we had even more amazing elephant sightings ahead.

Rhino, buffalo, lion, and elephant, only the leopard remains and all Big 5 will be sighted. I have only seen a leopard in the wild once, and that was on a ranger led drive in 1997. Suffice to say, they are elusive.

Dust Bath

Can't get enough of that dust bath!

Oh Yeah, that's an elephant. Our fourth sighted of the big 5

When these two came down the road all traffic stopped and got out of the way!

Friendship

Getting closer!

If you're thinking "I bet that guy could reach out of his car and touch that elephant," you're right!

Thanks, Michael! Very kind of you to say, but I consider myself to be, pretty much, a beginner in this pursuit...I'm trying to learn as much as I can. It's so beneficial to have access to a place like this, where I can see & learn from all the outrageously talented, friendly & such generously helpful folks, here on PB! Rock On!!!
