Ugliness has its own place

in aesthetics. It sometimes offers a good pointerpoint to the prettiness of a place!
Take, for example, these street lights going up all over town. They would win any competition for unmitigated ugliness. sometime later, I'll try and photograph the almost lovely electric poles in Shimla which were put up a hundred years ago…
The new poles are generating a lot of curiosity. An impromptu poll (conducted by me!) reveals that 9 out of 10 people thought they're simply awful. The 10th person was confident they wouldn't work, so we might not actually have to see the poles!

Isn't it? Am thinking of starting a signature campaign on the sheer fugliness of it....

Oh, so the lights are that low to the ground?
I thought the lights would be hoisted up the pole. Why on earth is the pole so tall then?
It's a waste of a whole bunch of (fugly) pole...

Well, they're standing underneath mainly because the installation of this particular was already over. (Done in the stealth, at night, I believe).

I love how people are just standing around watching or walking almost underneath.
Around here the whole block would be cordoned off in case things started falling during installation.

What irks me is that these lights are being placed in an area which has building of mostly late-1800s/early-1900s vintage... I feel like slapping the municipal corporation.

Wow, why so many lights? That seems like it will generate almost daylight-like brightness.
