Road-side shrines #1

by Soulcurry April. 25, 2014 1961 views

India is fairly crawling with road-side shrines. Given how unpredictable life is over here, we like the idea of having our gods close by… just in case… The shrines can be really tiny, or larger than ife. Some are colourful and well-tended; others, decrepit and look sad with neglect.
This shrine stars Hanuman who is sometimes referred to as India's “monkey god”. He's actually a monkey-like humanoid who is a central chanracter in the Hindu epic “Ramayana”.
He is projected as an obedient follower who is intelligent, strong and courageous. His best quality is his resourcefulness even in the most adverse of situations. Perhaps this is the reason that many of us call out to him when in distress - we know he will have a solution at hand.

I agree with sprite. He's clearly got to be packing some duct tape in those folds.

I loved the roadside shrines when I travelled around India.. I particularly liked some of Ganesh's shrines when they were placed strategically near nasty curves!
