The Kanchenjunga or Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest and the K2 (in the Karakoram range). Kanchenjunga has an elevation of 8586 metres and is situated in the Great Himalaya range, between Nepal and India.

Before the Mount Everest was measured by the Trigonometrical Survey of India in 1849, the Kanchenjunga was the highest in the world.

The snow covered mountain peaks of the Kanchenjunga range are the jewel of Nepal and India. The range is shared by Nepal, Sikkim and Northern West Bengal. There are five main peaks of this range, three in the Indo-Nepal border and two in Nepal.

The best Tourist destination for viewing the panoramic snow covered peaks in India is the Tiger Hill, situated in Darjeeling, West Bengal. Tourism blooms in both the Nepal and Indian side, with Darjeeling being a famous destination.

Kangchenjunga's name in the Limbu language is Senjelungma and is believed to be an abode of the omnipotent goddess Yuma Sammang. The locals in both India and Nepal worship these beautiful white mountain peaks and permission for trekking is rarely given from the Indian side.

The Himalayan landscape and the Nature's beauty is enjoyed by tourists and excursion-goers who savour the view of the Kanchenjunga from either Gangtok, Pelling, Kalimpong, Darjeeling or from the Nepal side.

There is a myth which says that a monster or super-human called “Yeti” or “Rakshasa” lives and protects the Kanchenjunga peaks, according to the Lepchas and
the Tibetan Buddhists. Several mountaineers and exhibitionists have claimed to have seen the monster or its' footsteps.

Photographers love to visit Darjeeling to capture the ice covered mountains of the Kanchengjunga. It is a beautiful landmark of not only India and Nepal but also of Asia.
