50mm

i've just recently bought a new 50mm/F1.4 lens for my D70 which is a fantastic thing for low light photography (thanks for the recommendation;-). to explore it's possibilities i went into the forest for some foreground/background shots and found these two tree trunks (alliteration [en.wikipedia.org] 4x!:-). i made a shot with the sharp foreground and one where the background is in focus. later at home when post-processing, i had the idea to “mix” the two pictures (as two 50% opacity layers in photoshop); which gave me this result.

this is just an example of what i like about photography. it's a constant way of exploring reality as an experiment of imagination.

focus on background

focus on foreground

overlay of both pictures above

i wonder whats the point of the overlay experiment... that you can make shots with the 50mm like you`d with a standard lens?

Excellent - when we give up experimenting we may as well give up on life... I'm getting quite philosophical in my old age!

I must admit that I'm too lazy (photographically speaking) to figure it all out, but I do appreciate a really shallow dof in a shot that isn't just a macro. It looks like you'll enjoy your new lens, and I'll look forward to seeing some of your experiments. :-)
