strange animals: the brain coral

by Stormfish September. 13, 2012 3716 views

brain corals - like any coral - are actual animals, despite their appearing “immobility”. they live and thrive in colonies of polyps that build a protective and static, stone hard skeleton which over time forms up in a globe shape, resembling the windings of a brain.

the polyps retract their tentacles during daytime, leaving only the hard skeleton visible; while during the night they can be seen feeding on small animals, as well as algae that lives in their tissue.

brain corals are fairly common in tropic water and are eager reef builders. due to their compact form, they are quite sturdy and protected from strong currents or hurricanes.

although the myriads of polyps in one coral stock, who are genetically identical, but individual animals, share nutrients and thus live in a kind of symbiosis, there is no relation to the “thinking” function of a brain - each of the polyps living in the colony is a self standing animal, not sharing a community mind in any meaningful way of the word.

No comunity mind? Instead they are highly individualistic, like you are!

Great capture! But really, who knows what or if it is thinking? We humans are forever overestimating our supposed knowledge.
