wayan likes to poke at stuff

wayan is an indonesian dive instructor on the “indo siren” with almost 20 years of experience and a dive suit that was close to self disintegration (i promised not to mention where the biggest hole in his suit was;-).

i've hardly ever seen someone so impatient under water, despite of his countless dives, tremendous knowledge of dive places, fishes and corals. the moment his head was submerged, he was rushing towards something he saw on the ground, the reef, the coral walls. the guy was more like a fish himself underwater than a diver.

using his metal stick, he was constantly busy checking algae, pointing at things and finding the smallest of animals on every dive. an ideal person to just hang around with when you're not so familiar with all the flora and fauna down there.

equally, while on the boat, he was repairing equipment with rusty screw drivers, cleaned regulators, tested pressure tubes, while telling stories about whatever he had seen on his previous adventures in the sea of green. even though some of his stories sounded like hilarious tall stories from a parallel universe, i personally believed every word he said.

i'm not sure if he would say the same about me.

these ladybugs (wasn't able to find their scientific name or reference in the gooleverse, sorry), which are small crustaceans, are as tiny as a needle pin and live on soft corals. i would have never found them without wayan. apparently, they are very rare, even though he able to identify them on about every other dive.

He looks a very cheerful chap... just the kind of person to share a few beers with on deck :-)

Yep, it's just a BIG tide pool ! 8^) I'm quite sure it says something about my experience with 'teachers' but the minute I saw that pointing stick I was turned off! It is refreshing however to hear you speak highly of someone!

you must have a powerful camera if these are as tiny as a pin head.
Great adventure and fabulous portrait of your instructor.

I guess he possessed the ability to make you feel secure ... His charm is well demonstrated by your very endearing photo of him.
