undilah! ("vote please!")

on may 5. 2013, the malaysians went for their elections. for weeks before, the national party (barisan national, represented by a blue flag with a scale on it) and rakyat their opposition (a white flag with a circled rocket on it), had decorated streets, buildings, crossings and any place reachable with an ocean of flags, posters, banners and pictures of the candidates.

an atmosphere of sizzling anticipation lay in the air, and almost all people i spoke to where having high hopes for “change” - which would have meant that the ruling national party, governing malaysia for over 50 years, would be thrown out of office and hopefully all of the thriving corruption and injustice of their reignship with them.

election participation turned out to be a record of over 80% all over the country. first results that came streaming in during the evening of election days showed promising numbers for the opposition - whole counties, like penang, a predominately chinese community, had almost 90% votes for the opposition. even classical malay districts like kota bahru showed pro-opposition results. then news of sudden blackouts in elector districts dribbled in through alternative media channels (while the government controlled TV and mass media streams brought nothing but endless discussions); videos of riot-similar conflicts on election localities turned up in youtube, on facebook, pictures were posted of people who (to malaysians) looked suspiciously like bangladesh foreigners but carried a valid malaysian identity card allowing them to vote for barisan national, and mysterious additional ballot boxes were presented last minute to the election offices; sometimes summing up more voters in a community that were resident there…

by the morning, the national party had won. again. full majority. celebrating their 56. year of government. and a whole nation woke up, rubbing their eyes from the sand of hope it had been sleeping with… and nothing had changed, nothing but a little more of blackness in their hearts, a further weight on the scale that one day, one fine day, will be finally tipping over… but not now.
