Cicada are extremely well camouflaged being colored like tree bark. Their wings are partly transparent and antireflective. Cicadas stop singing if someone like me with a camera come to close, but after a while the concert is as loud as it was before. Large cicadas drink plant sap and can fly rapidly to escape if disturbed. They didn’t know the slogan “don’t drink and fly”! One of the cicadas was so drunk it mixed up my husband with a tree and tried to drink from his neck. My husband was NOT amused.
This are the exuviae, the remains of an exoskeleton of larvae, which are the juvenile cicidas. Sometimes there are sticked hundreds exuviae all over the bark of a tree.
