There are many traditions to force good fortune and of course in Germany and Austria has to be at least one pig (pictures, balloons, sweets, figures, or a real cooked/grilled pork) involved. Sadly I can only offer only one attractive picture, therefore the big fat luck comes in a double pack.
I'm lucky, I don't have to follow the Spanish tradition of eating twelve grapes to have good luck. I prefer to drink wine, which is usually made of more than twelve grapes.
In Vienna we will eat all day and night long. In the early evening we will eat some finger food, sweets and drinks at our place. "Gulasch" will be the highlight around midnight. My friend Petra has already prepared this tasty food and we will eat it after drinking Champagne, dancing "The Blue Danube" and watching the fireworks from the balcony in the eight floor.
In Frankfurt (Germany) we have to eat "Sauerkraut and Stutzweck". Sauerkraut shall bring money in the next year. I deeply believe, this tradition was only invented to save money. Stutzweck are a very traditional form and only made for New Year. It's made of flour, butter, yeast, sugar, salt, milk, eggs and little bit of lemon. It's shaped as an oval with two round knobs on each end. The knobs symbolize the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year. Twelve cuts in the middle symbolize the twelve months. Tomorrow my Mother will bake Stutzweck for all of us.
We will eat all day and night to end 2017 - to be well fed until the end of the old year. We will start the new year well fed, than we will try to get rid of all the fat around the hips until next December.
