Visiting Archimedes

by Sigrid Strohschneider-Laue January. 28, 2018 2088 views

Today we visited the long-eared owl Archimedes in Wiener Tierschutzverein. He still doesn't eat by himself, so he will be stuffed with a day-old chick once in a while. A healthy diet, which will soon turn him into a dodo. Yes, he is still recovering, but at least he was sitting upright and not hunched down like the invalid he was last Thursday. Even his ears - the long feathers on his head - were upright and he showed the amazing capability of owls to turn the head almost for 270°. When we came in the room, he was sitting with his back to the door, but his head was turned in our direction. A bright and shiny eye was fixed on my camera. I shot some pictures and I didn't care, if they were good or not, because he is kept in a quiet place, where visitors usually are not allowed. I'm very glad, that we got permission for this brief visit.

Maybe he will be transferred to Greifvogelstation Haringsee next week. Somehow he managed to "owl himself" into my heart, so I will follow up on him, wherever he will go.

Archimedes was rotating his head over his back and looked at us.

Lovely to see him looking a little perkier - let’s hope he makes a full recovery!

Yesterday my daughter informed me, that owls have difficulties to take dead food unless they are used to it, Maybe that is the reason, why they have to stuff him.

I was really happy to see a watchful behavior instead of dull eyes.

Actually I still hope for the best update ever: I set him free and take a picture of his departure! *sigh*

That head turn feature is fantastic and so funny. Good to know he is getting better.

I liked his his slightly piss off mood. At least he is recovering his self-esteem.

Already looks much better, your little owl. One good deed outways all your bad doing, a word off Buddha. So that base you have covered. Well done.

Great, if I will be reborn, I won't start as an amoeba but as an ant! joy
Yes, he looks better, but I worry, because he doesn't eat by himself ...

I missed the original story so glad you linked it. He definitely is a fortunate owl to have you drive by. Kuddos to you Sigrid!

Sadly, that isn't an option, because priority no 1: Always have enough space for my father's wheelchair.
