Let's Celebrate the Wart Hog

by Sigrid Strohschneider-Laue February. 05, 2019 1033 views

It’s the Year of the Pig. To be precise: it’s the Year of the Earth Pig. The last animal in the chinese zodiac, which is a 12 year cycle, beginning with the rat.

My first idea about “earth pig” was a wart hog. Here it is – a large wart hog! I photographed it at Zoo Magdeburg/Germany in 2009. I was very excited, because it was the first time I saw a living wart hog, besides on TV or in a museum as taxidermy.

I've seen lots of these in Namibia. These are the snacks of lions. Love the picture

Snack? I would bet they are more like fast food, which strikes back in the most vicious way! Did you take some pictures?!

That’s so awesome. I’d love the opportunity to see one in person.

He/she looks to be taking a break in the sun.

I heard they are freezing very easily. It was a hot day in May, but it seemed that the German sun was hot enough for a "naked pig", which is used to the hot African sun. Actually I was impressed and I'm sure I don't want to come to close to an animal with such large tusks and so much guts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oyhk6kRAJW0

Fearless, mighty and very frightening even in its sleep it's snoring and grunting like the archenemy itself. smile

Well looks like you outdid us all with your warthog for today's theme. He is a cute guy although I would rather not get into an augment with him, no doubt i would lose.

joy I couldn't resist - yes, I never will resist ... Warthogs are such powerful diggers and they hang out in burrows - in my opinion they are the most "earthy" pig of them all. Besides mole (reasearcher) and hamster (collector) warthogs (digger) should be another heraldic symbole of archaeologists.

Really strange, extrem fast and hectic creatures. I like pigs in general, but I was glad there was a fence between this fellow and me!
