Manaus, not what you would expect in the middle of the Amazon. It started as a settlement in the 17th c., but its boom was in the late 19th c. being the rubber monopoly capital of the world. During the rubber boom, it was a time of pure opulence and indulgence. It is said that there was more Champagne consumed in Manaus at the turn of the 20th c. than Paris. The Grand Opera house is a testament to the opulence. The grand architecture is not limited to the Opera house, the market is another fine example simple but elegant iron work.
