Ouro Preto (Black Gold) was the heart of the gold rush in 18th Century. Although the gold is long gone, the remnants of the rush and it's heritage is preserved as a living, breathing culture and place. It is a place of tranquility, ease and casualness, in contrast to what it must have been in it's heyday.
The town's and neighbouring Mariana's historic baroque architecture blends seamlessly with it's setting in green hills.
The 2015 Fundao dam collapse impacted the neighbouring Mariana and with tragic consequences for the whole beautiful region.
