''you can't be feminine and be a feminist at the same time''
The dreaded 'F' word—
Many people offer up the argument that women are not the “same” as men so there can’t be equality.
Kathy Caprino covers 'leadership & women's issues' on Forbes, she writes—
It’s critical to understand that ''same'' does not mean ''equal''. The issue here is about equal rights and equal access to opportunities. Men and women don’t have to be the ''same'' in physicality to have the right to equality.
In other words, because their bodies are different (many say ''weaker'' and ''smaller''), and because men and women have different physical capabilities, these physical differences mean equality is not possible.
Men and women are DIFFERENT but EQUAL!
Another misconception here is—many people—often assume 'feminism' to be related with ONLY 'women'.
Today's feminist activists are women and men from all walks of life. We need to emphasize on the fact that today's feminism at its core is about equality for all.
Being a 'radical feminist'
For some, the idea of the term becomes—'pro-women' & slowly—'anti-men'.
If we were to go into the etymology of the word; it is clear that it combines 'Feminist' and 'Nazi' to come together as a whole. The idea of 'Feminazi' or an 'obnoxious', 'militant' feminist is again a far-extreme theory.
Why do people oppose the idea of feminism?
Many people fear that the contemporary feminism wave will hit men the most & they'll eventually lose out of— power, influence, impact, authority, control, and economic opportunities.
If 'equality' already exists, why do we need feminism?
To all those believing in equality for women, but not in feminism—
We want people to stop living under the rock.
Most people believe that PATRIARCHY is a thing of the past—that the system no longer exists..and women have come a long way—we can walk freely, go to cinema halls, drive, vote, wear clothes of our choice...and so on and so forth.
Fact: Women are raped, women are denigrated, women are marginalized all around the world. Even in the most glorious, most 'modern', most powerful land of Uncle Sam & Statue of Liberty.
We need to realize that even in the ERA of modernization, women face discrimination to a greater extent, and men too are suppressed by patriarchy.
There is an URGENT need to dissolve this construct.
There is an URGENT need to eliminate stereotypes.
There's right to equality, yes!
But do we truly consider each other EQUAL?
Is equality rightly served to ALL of us?
Start small, but do start. We want people regardless of age, gender, ethnicity/race, religion, sexual orientation to know, or at least acknowledge the different ways men and women are treated.
Because it's a HUMANITY issue.
We want people to support equality and equity in general.
HOPE is a BIG word but here's to hoping to feel undivided!
And, yes, honor your feminine gifts, it's possible to be feminine and a feminist. :)
P.S: For people wondering why there are "too many" women in the above photo—I spent my crucial years in a female dominating environment. Always grateful & thankful to these humans.
