Mt. Naeba 2013-03

I just reworked a little on those pictures that I did years ago. This is mountain Naeba which is located in Nigata prefecture, Japan.

It was all foggy in the morning.

We took a rope way to move to the neighboring resort, which was reported to have better snow condition.

Powder skiing.

A friend of mine got tipped over something in the snow and was about to fall down.

A snowy hill.

A snowy hill.

It was not that cold as it used to be and we had little snow this year. So I miss those heavy snow fall that we had in Japan. I was in the snow couple of weeks ago, as you can find from last two post of mine, I'm still craving for snow...

I like #1 and #5 both for different reasons.

#1 for the mood and feeling of depth
#5 for the sense of scale and layers. The foreground hill is sharp while the background hill is covered in blown snow. You can feel it coming for you.

Thank you, Kevin. I like both pictures in the same way you do, but #5 needs little effort to fix it - it was almost perfect as it is - while #1 asked me bunch of job to come up with as I want. I'm happy that you like them. smile

I shared #5 on my Pinterest boards and it has been getting a lot of reshares there. Lots of people like it!

However Kim,
Hi, love the use of colour in these BW shots ... My favourite I the first image of the desolate tree 🙂

Hi, Stephen. Thanks for your comment. I started my photography from BW photo and still love them. The first one is my favorite, too. I did not expect the picture will come out in this way, since it was all foggy that day.

These are lovely, and they make me miss skiing! smile It's been many years since I've gone, but your photos remind me how exhilarating it is. You do such a nice job with your edits! They are very subtle, never distracting or overdone.

Thank you. Matter of fact, I don't like skiing itself - I'm a terrible skier - but I love snow and the mountain in the snow. They gave me a breath taking impression. The scenery of that day was like that in a dream and I did a little for the editing. The scenery was amazing and does not need any effort, very little though smile

Again a fantastic set, Ho ! The skiing photos are very special. Looks so full of fun. I've never skied in my life...I'm grown up in a very flat region of germany. The highest 'mountain' nearby was the garbage dump with 49 meters...  smilesmile Love the mood in #1 !!

Thank you, Heike. Yes, I can understand so many cannot find decent downhill to ski nearby. He have lots of downhill and mountains but do not have enough snow in Korea. Most of resorts run their slope with artificial snow, which is the reason why we go to Japan - they have natural snow and dramatic slopes. At a first glance I didn't think I can get good photo from the foggy shot but I worked on and on it to come up with that in good mood. I'm happy that you like them. smile

Thank you. Usually I do lots of Lightroom works to adjust pictures but what I did on that photo is 1.adjust brightness 2. turn it into black and white, merely those two. Snow, lighting, and the shape of mountain worked together in harmony.
