Today we met up with some friends and went to the Maldon Mud Race. [maldonmudrace.com], a race through the cold mud to raise money for local charities. First up- sample some local seafood!I passed on the jellied eels, above (ugh!!)…
but the local oysters were another matter! Mmmmm, good!
The first dude dressed up in a funny costume we saw…
Brrrr… it was soooo cooold that day. Many of the entrants wore wet suits.
All of them had to duct tape their shoes on or they would have slid off in the quicksand like Maldon mud.
These guys must've been freezing! (Dressed as Spartans).
The entrants assemble…
our friends, from left: Isobel, her husband Richard, Nazanin and husband Martin. Martin and Paul go waaaay back. (We've spent a number of New Year Eve's with Martin- in Barcelona, where he lives, in Chelmsford, where he's from, and one year in Berlin, with Lisa D. and Kelley, friends from B'more.)
Entrants gather for the race “warm up”. Not sure how much it acually worked. ;-)
all in silly costumes..
Warming up in the cold, wintry Essex weather- the sun was in, the sun was out, the sun was in, the sun was out, etc, etc… ;-)
Paul with our friends.
Those Spartans again!
some teams “ran”, er crawled, for causes. The chickens above were against battery farming. Olympian Fatima Whitbread started the race. She's in the picture above with the short hair and black coat. (annotated).
A couple of entrants do some last minute costume adjustments.
me with the Spartans.
and they're off!! What a slog. They interviewed some of the first finishers, one of whom had “run the London marathon several times”, who said “this was the toughest race he'd ever done”.
most slogged along on their hands and knees.
This finisher let me snap his pic. He was shivering, muttering, “never again, never again”. ;-)
Helicopter takes off from the event site.
Once the race was done and the crowds cleared the promenade, I was able to snap a 4 part panoramic of the beach and race site. This is a tributary and when the tide goes out, it leaves the famous mud.
You'll see they ran an emergency line out to the course. One or two people got stuck so badly they had to be pulled in.
Nazanin and Martin. Martin met her on a holiday in Iran and they married about a year and half ago. This was our first time meeting her. Cheers to the newlyweds! :-)
Boats and such…
kind of picturesque…A fun day out! After this we went to a pub and had a filling sunday roast lunch. :-)

The wacky stuff we humans do...
Love the pic of you and the Spartan. Didn't you fancy joining in ?
I'm cold just looking at that guy in #20.
That looks like it would be a lot more fun on a warm day. I love oysters, but they really don't look too good close up!
Egads-I can see how the mud wuold stick to you, therefore making you colder. Those wetsuit people had the right idea.
Das Studentenleben in Schweden darf natürlich auch nicht zu kurz kommen ;) Auf dem Weg zu einer Geburtstagsparty 🎉😊 BBQ at the beach with some exchange students…
We spent a week in Pantanal, looking for the elusive Jaguar, and, we found it!!
