Built on an island formed by the river Oise, Mr Godin created his Utopia in the middle of the 19th Century. Here the famous cast iron stoves were built up until the end of the 1960s. The workmen and owners of the factory lived in appartments built round a central courtyards with bathrooms and toilets on each floor. Their children were looked after in a creche, a nursery school and regular school up to the age of 14 and all this from the 1850s.
