      Congrats on the FP! Fascinated by the continuation of a tradition that makes no sense at all! Would have loved some narration as to the background of this tradition. The comments section clearly shows that this tradition is in vogue in other countries too. Is this just some sort of bravado on the part of some. Or is there some logical explanation to it? Is it symbolic of 'washing away all the dirt/sins' of last year? Will someone clarify?

      Bonne Année et Bravo Tomie pour la FP et Félicitations (depuis la Barbade où je suis).
      Je crois que certaines personnes sont un peu fêlées :))) ça doit être glacé grave !!!! en tout cas d'autres mettent la tenue de plongée, ce n'est pas un vrai bain ça :)))

      Congratulations on your cold as ice featured photo! We have a "Polar Dip" here in Port Dover Ontario Canada every Jan 1st. Some years the ice is so high they need a ladder to get out.....brrrrrrrr

      May be the only bath they have all year! Could cause a heart attack...otherwise it would be exhilarating! Interesting post :-)

      We do that here in Canada too and call it the Polar Bear Dip, ours is to raise $$ for charity, like the Food bank...Crazy! But for a good cause...

      There is a similar custom in Romania. It's a religious habit on January 6.

      Interestind tradition! In Russia such kind of bath celebration will be at night on the 19th of January in any frost.
