Week 7: Theme - Body Parts

by Tracylynn Seeger February. 18, 2011 2297 views

This is a shot I've been planning to try for ages, a macro shot of an eye. I tried to use my 5-year-old daughter as a model, but we were stuck inside because of rain, and she couldn't keep still long enough for the longer exposure I needed to use inside. So I decided to use my own eye. This turned out to be much harder than I expected! I had to use the auto-focus, and it was very tricky to get my eye in exactly the right position for the auto-focus to get a lock. After several attempts I got there in the end, and I'm pleased with the result.

Kit & setup:
Nikon D40 camera on a tripod
85mm macro lens
Indoors, lit by incandescent lights

Post editing:
I corrected the white balance and adjusted the lighting levels in Photoshop Elements 8.

EXIF Data:
Exposure 0.33 sec
Aperture f/8
Focal Length 85 mm
ISO Speed 800

Great capture. I've tried the odd self portrait and found it so hard to get a sharp shot.
