Day 166 - Project 365 “Skyscraper”

Being in NYC I thought today’s shot would be easy. So I decided to give myself a challenge. I put the nifty fifty lens on the camera and walked out the house. Man when I started to frame my shots was I in for a big surprise. I was not able to capture much of what I was invisioning those shots to be. The limitation of a prime lens outside of a portrait shot was so hard. I had to put in a lot more thought and to use my body to zoom in or out. No easy feat for capturing skyscrapers up close; which was my orginal intention. I caught this shot as I was just about to head home hoping I got a decent image. I think I did ok.

It has a "historic" feel to the capture, I cannot explain why. I like it

Thanks Lee!  I think it’s black and white image that gives it that historic feel.  I love my NYC street scenes in black and white.

It's more than that - I believe the prime lens gives the image that special proportion which was only possible in "historic" analog cameras because they also didn't have a seamless zoom capability

Oh I did not think about it that way.  I don't have that much experience with analog camera's and would have never thought to think a prime lens would have an overall affect on an images look and feel.  I think I'm going to have to see if I can get a similar shot with my zoom lens and see if the look and feel are different.

I think you did better than ok and I know exactly what you mean as far as limitations. I have gotten very lazy, using the 28-300mm; zoom in, zoom out and one has it all. But with the prime one really needs  think through the shots and of course the frustration level rises  as well. But it is a good way to challenge oneself, at least for me it humbles me, makes me realize that I am not as good as I perceive myself to be at times smile

Thanks Camellia for the encouragement.  I think I'm committed to use the prime lens more.
