Amazing! I have never seen pupae except for in butterfly exhibits when they keep them in a separate enclosure (and they were not ready to emerge either). How did you know when it would be time for the butterfly to come out?

It's a nice question!
1. A pupa to an adult butterfly:
The life duration of pupa for a lemon butterfly in summer in Taiwan is about 10 to 12 days. On first 8-10 days, they are either green or brown color with no transparency. On the last 2 days, they will become transparent and the wing patterns will be apparent. You may like to review my 98th report with  photos.

The most important key point (the secret sign) is the separation of his / her body from the shell. When I see that, I take an uninterrupted watching for a period  (few minutes to half hour) and catch the  emerging moment by photos or a video with a camera tripod. Otherwise, before the "secret sign", I just watch the transparent pupa intermittently on the last day. Of course, before I got this experience, I have ever watched two or three pupae continually for more than 10 hours. sweat smile
2. A 5th instar caterpillar to a chrysalis (pupa):
In comparison with the point 1, it is easier. The duration of the pre-pupal stage is usually less than 24 hours. So once I see the immobile caterpillar with silks in the morning, I expect the molting moment is in the evening of the same day.
3. A 4th instar caterpillar to a 5th instar caterpillar:
Until now, I have no idea about the transform time. I just chanced to see the process a few times. I feel the facial swelling may be the sign. Maybe I will known in the next year.

Thank you for the explanation! I'm glad you've learned the secret sign. smile Nature rewards people who are patient and watch the details! Thanks again for sharing the photos and what you have learned from watching them. Butterflies have such an interesting life, even if it is short.
