In addition to the solar eclipse that happened on the summer solstice, how do we know that summer has come? My answer is the cicada.

On this day (25th June), a cicada (Cryptotympana pustulata) visited my balcony in Taichung, Taiwan. He has beautiful orange-red colors of veins on his wings. In fact, his has orange-red colors on his legs.

The edges of his tymbals are also orange-red.

On the next day (26th June), he climbed on a branch of a Plumeria obtusa tree. His wings were folded because he was resting.

Another male cicada (Cryptotympana pustulata) stayed on a branch of a pencil tree (Euphorbia tirucalli) to join the singing competition. His tail was flat because he was resting.

Wow! Excellent camera work/study of this fascinating creature! I remember them well from when I lived in Texas. I had a dog, who liked to carry them in his mouth, without hurting them. He seemed to be amused to hear/feel them make their loud distress buzzes, while he held them captive in his mouth. He always came to show me this trick. I would always laugh, which seemed to give him great delight! Afterwards he would let it escape, to fly away to the nearest safe place, high in a tree! It was one of his favorite "dog jokes".......smile

Yes, he was quite a comedian and, being a retriever, he's been trained to retrieve, without injuring....He had a very delicate mouth/touch....

😎 Tsao, no matter how skilled you become in post processing, they are still going to remain ugly. But you know, ugly insects have never stopped me from capturing them 😉
