The balcony observer's 260th report- Parasol leaf trees 2/2 (Macaranga tanarius)

by Tsao T-F August. 10, 2020 242 views

In fact, parasol leaf trees on the balcony were not planted by me, but rather grew out from the stool left by a certain bird. At that time, I didn't eliminate them as weeds; on the contrary, I treated them as treasures and watered them. Today, it is one of the reasons why birds love to visit me.

The capsules of the parasol leaf tree are full of fleshy soft spines. A few of bracts next capsules have not fallen off. Margins of bracts appear jagged edges.

The two yellow pieces in the middle of the capsule are stigmas of the flower.

This year, parasol leaf trees on the balcony were very fruitful that attracted comings of Japanese white-eyes (Zosterops japonicus).

Only the pedicle and stigma are left in the capsule that has been eaten.

There was an empty shell of an eaten capsule stuck on the tree.

This is really a good morning.

The empty shell photographed last year is more beautiful than the one photographed this year. But last year there were no shots of birds eating fruit.

This was another educational post. I had not heard of parasol tree leaves, so I looked them up and then looked up elephant ears  to see if they were related...not so. Anyway I realized that I had not heard of this tree ( not because I have a black thumb) because they do not grow in our area, they are more prominent in your side of the world. Anyway, your captures are really nice. I like how the light and shadows have been captured.

I am very lucky to have parasol leaf trees (Macaranga tanarius). It's a pioneer species that easily fills forest clearings. Another pioneer species on my balcony is paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera). I believe you have seen them in my previous reports.
Since it is not difficult to find them in the countryside, most people regard them as wild trees and will not let them grow in the garden. However, my wild birds treat them as treasures on the balcony, and so do I.

Karma, I like this word.smile
Actually, I don’t know how to shoot on a sunny day. I like images with mixed light and shadow. However, due to shadows or backlighting, the bird's face tends to turn black.

Try to use HDR technique. It could work in your case
