The balcony observer's 262th report- Summer is the season of butterflies. (Papilio demoleus)

【Summer is the season of butterflies.

This year, there were six caterpillars of the Lemon butterfly (Papilio demoleus) hatching on my balcony so far: five of them have successfully turned into beautiful butterflies (four males and one girl); one was send to a friend, and it (male) transformed successfully also. If the butterfly that was send to the other person is not counted, the butterfly of other species is not counted, but the eleven in the past are counted, then there are totally sixteen Lemon butterflies with successful metamorphoses on my balcony. 【11 + 5 = 16】

The year before last, when I had the fifth one, I took a very serious shot of each step of the transformation of butterfly from larva to adult, which was stated in my 94th to 101st reports (8 in total), and the 102nd report with a video. Welcome to review.

In a sunny morning, I found an egg of Lemon butterfly (Papilio demoleus) on the undersurface of a young leaf (orange tree) on my balcony in Taichung, Taiwan.

This "pearl" is less than one millimeter in size, and it is easy to miss if you don't look carefully.

A few days later, there were three hatched larvae of Lemon butterfly in this cluster of young leaves.

In fact, as of now, a total of six larvae of Lemon butterfly hatched on my balcony this year. That's right, you only saw five (simulating the appearance of a bird's stool), because the biggest one was given to my friend to raise.

In a few days, the larvae shed their skin several times and became large and green fifth-instar (final instar) larvae. Look, all five are still happy there!

The larvae eat so much during this period, and the whole leaf is gnawed until only the central vein is left.

When they stop eating, they will choose a darker place to pupate.

The one in the right of the picture is still in the pre-pupal stage, and the other two have changed to pupas.

All three have become pupas.

On my balcony, there are three pupae of Lemon butterfly hanging from an orange tree, ready to transform into butterflies.

#10 Evolution is so amazing to make a cocoon that looks exactly like a twisted leaf. So well disguised.

I didn't know you then, therefor never saw the video. But watched today till the end....all I can say AMAZING! Such an ugly creature (in my opinion) turns into such a beautiful, beautiful insect. Definitely it's the case of the ugly duckling. Thank you for sharing, loved the previous post and looking forward to the rest of this post smile

Many people like butterflies, but they may haven't seen the growth process of butterflies. If we only take a look at them occasionally, we will be wondering whether these creatures with such huge differences in appearance are really the same individual in different life stages? Out of curiosity, and fortunately, I observed this magical transformation process several times. Later, I was finally able to record most steps of the transformation with a movie. Share with friends, and I am not afraid to forget it later.

I shared your video with a friend who is not a photobloger but an avid butterfly admirer. She actually knows all the names and variety of butterflies. She loved your video. In my opinion it was magnificently done.
