The balcony observer's 307th report- The long nose whistle & blue eyes (NO.26 butterfly)

How to celebrate a birthday? Of course it is to have a party and play games!

This is my NO.26 Lemon Butterfly (Papilio demoleus) on the balcony in Taichung, Taiwan. Her beautiful patterns have been revealed from the transparent pupa shell, indicating that she is about to hatch.

I waited for a long time, and she finally emerged from the pupa. The newly hatched butterfly wings are small and wrinkled, and their mouthparts (proboscis) resemble a tape measure divided into two.

She tried to elongate the new mouthpart, like children playing the long nose whistle at a party.

Be... Be... Be..., Yes, she did.

After that, the two parts of the split mouthpart were merged together so that she could suck liquid food through the "rice stalk-like" cavity. When not in use, the mouthpart is rolled up, like a ring in front of the face.

Although I was the only one to attend her party, she still seemed to be happy.

She tried her best to spread her wings to show me. In addition to the red spots at the end that I often observe, I also saw the two "blue eyes" in the middle.

This is the first time I have seen a pair of "blue eyes" on the wings of my newly hatched butterfly.

I temporarily hid her on the back of the leaf of the parasol leaf tree (Macaranga tanarius). Is the party over?

Amazingly beautiful to see the emergence of the butterfly.

I used to use the analogy of the butterfly life cycle in teaching the management of change. The idea is that, if you are a caterpillar you have to go through a sticky mess (took liberties here) to become the beautiful butterfly. The change process can often be a difficult one.  Another idea was, 'that if you just lightened up you too could become a butterfly' - as I remember it, these ideas came from the management guru Professor Tom Peters.

Anyway another WONDERFUL series - thanks for sharing!

Glad to be adopted into your 'friend's' list - glad to have met you too Tsao (my privilege).

I've put management science behind me these days and don't try to keep up with new developments - never considered myself a Master rather a learner and facilitator. sun with face

Cheers,

Andrew

Thank you for your sweet words. Haha, don’t forget to set up an automatic watering system and an electric fan on the balcony! Then, you can take a graceful break there every day.wine glass

It's a beautiful thing and the lifecycle of a butterfly is wondrous.

Thanks, Gethin. I think it's a good idea to use the butterfly as the protagonist of the story. If I publish the life cycle of an ugly bug, maybe only few people will like to read it.ghost

I am not sure why you say "old" blue eyes. I consult google and I guess you may be the fan of  Frank Sinatra, right?grinning
