The balcony observer's 316th report- Whose house? (Paraleptomenes)

Years ago, I found a small animal nest made of mud on the corner of the balcony. After several observations, I didn't see any animals coming in or out. I thought to myself, probably an old home that has been abandoned.

Last August (2020), another identical nest was found on the undersurface of a Pachira aquatica (Malabar chestnut) leaf. After several observations, I still didn't see any animals coming in or out. I thought to myself, it's weird, why not use the newly built nest?

Except for the full circle of mud at the entrance of the cave, the body of the cave is actually covered with only half of the cylinder, and the other half is the leaf itself.

The nest is long, narrow and rough, with the opening facing upward. Whose house is this?

I didn't understand until one evening I found a small wasp sneaking in. I suddenly realized that this is the house of a solitary wasp. She went out to work in the morning and went home to sleep before dark. It's no wonder that I couldn't see her during the day before, and I mistakenly thought this was an old home that someone didn't want.

When I read "mud" I thought to myself, wasps, because we have tons of them around here. But then reading on and seeing that it was built under a leaf, I figured it could not be, because all the ones I have seen are usually in the crevices of doors, or corners of windows, etc. Interesting that one would find a mud hut under a leaf.

Thanks for the feedback. Interestingly, we
have similar experiences on both sides of the earth. I agree with you that most
of them are in the crevices of doors, or corners of windows, etc. Actually, I
have some photos of them, but I don’t like those photos very much, because both
the objects and backgrounds are gray. So I am very lucky:

1. This is an unusual discovery.

2. The species can be identified.

3. The above two have photos as evidence.camera

Regarding the location of the wasps (Delta
pyriforme) mud houses, I have seen them on the walls and on the trees.
