The balcony observer's 333th report- Why dance? (Mulberry, Part 1)

by Tsao T-F July. 01, 2021 235 views

When it comes to berries, people think of its sweet and juicy taste. But they said that mulberry is actually not a berry in botany, but a collective fruit. So what? Anyway, they are the favorite of the birds on my balcony.

A bunch of mulberry fruits turning red was on my balcony in Taichung, Taiwan.

A Light-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus sinensis) called A-Shou found it first.

He opened his mouth wide, and his saliva seemed to be dripping.

He didn't have time to eat the fruit, but he was already dancing happily with his wings flapping.

Damn! It’s really shy. Did you see my dance steps?

The mulberries on another part of the balcony also turned red a little bit.

It was discovered by A-Shou again, who loves to dance.

Of course, he showed off his signature move "wing-flapping dance" again!

Note 1: A berry is a small, pulpy, and often edible fruit. Typically, berries are juicy, rounded, brightly colored, sweet, sour or tart, and do not have a stone or pit, although many pips or seeds may be present. Common examples are strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, red currants, white currants and blackcurrants.

In common usage, the term "berry" differs from the scientific or botanical definition of a fruit produced from the ovary of a single flower in which the outer layer of the ovary wall develops into an edible fleshy portion (pericarp). The botanical definition includes many fruits that are not commonly known or referred to as berries, such as grapes, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, bananas, and chili peppers. Fruits commonly considered berries but excluded by the botanical definition include strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries, which are aggregate fruits and mulberries, which are multiple fruits.

Note 2: An aggregate fruit or etaerio is a fruit that develops from the merger of several ovaries that were separated in a single flower.

Note 3: Multiple fruits, also called collective fruits, are fruiting bodies formed from a cluster of fruiting flowers, the inflorescence. Each flower in the inflorescence produces a fruit, but these mature into a single mass in which each flower has produced a true fruit. After flowering the mass is called an infructescence.

What a cute little guy. Love the tuft on his head. As a kid I grew up on white mulberry. My uncle had a tree in his backyard which would produce this white sweet "fruits'  Traditionally these white mulberries were dried out and mixed with different nuts as a treat. Anyway, rambling done...love your information of the mulberries and your photos of this cute little bird.
