Ruby Crowned Kinglet

Above is my first picture of a ruby crowned kinglet, from last year - not the best photo, but can you see why I fell in love with that angry little face?! It bumped this little guy up to the top of my bird wish list pretty fast. :)

Over the weekend I was happy to find a ruby crowned kinglet who stuck around long enough for me to get some close-ups.

Ruby crowned kinglets are similar to the golden crowned kinglet, but they have a red crown instead of yellow and black. They also have a partial white eye ring. Both birds are tiny, not much bigger than a hummingbird.

Kinglets don't seem like they mind people very much. I followed this one for about 10 minutes, and at one point he hopped right up near my feet, so close that I couldn't even take a photo.

And then my fun ended abruptly when *someone* decided to show up and start some trouble...

The ruby crowned kinglet was not happy to have a visitor, so he flashed his crown and then both birds took off chasing each other. It was fun while it lasted. :)

Thank you! I didn’t know much about them until I saw pictures of them on a local birding site. Looks like they can be seen in lots of different places in the US, but it depends on the time of year.

I love it so far, and it was really helpful for a super long and involved dream I had the other night! Thanks so much for recommending it. I'll have to look for Bittersweet!
