Mama Cat

I shared pictures of Mama Cat’s kittens earlier this year, but I’ve never been able to get a picture of her even though we see her around every now and then. Last weekend when I was outside watching the birds, she was sneaking through our bushes.

After giving me the stare-down, she finally decided to pop out in the open for a quick portrait.

Don't mess with Mama Cat!

Don't mess with Mama Cat!

I’m happy to report that three of her kittens have survived, including the two in my photos. I don’t know how many there were originally – they are all very wary of people and the two black ones are hard to tell apart, especially when they are running away or hiding. Her kittens weren’t with her this time, but the last time I saw them all together, they looked like they were getting big enough to be off on their own soon.

A beauty ! In german we call this tricolor cats : Glückskatze. Means lucky cat. In the Middle Ages people were convinced that the lucky cats kept the fire away from their own house. smileBeautiful pictures, Bethany.

I can so relate to this story...I feed and shelter 5 stray cats in my street and have done so for the last 5 years...Luckily there aren't many stray cats in our neighborhood anymore (because of TNR) but whenever I notice one not around the others for a long period of time, I tend to worry! Luckily they are all safe and healthy so far :) Mama cats face is so lovely...she looks so brave and protective :)

She is definitely brave! It was impressive watching her protect her kittens, and gave me a whole new respect for her and how difficult it is for them to survive in the wild. Interesting too how much they move around and disappear for stretches of time once you start watching their habits. I'm glad you look out for the cats around your house! :)

Thank you! After the fact, I decided it was adorable. In the moment, I was honestly a little scared. This cat is a fierce little lady who has even charged at one of our dogs before, so I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into! smile

Now that you mention it, I looked at #3 and she looks a bit angry.

Yep, I got the feeling she thought she could kick my butt if it came down to that...
