White-Tailed Deer

by Bethany Plonski February. 24, 2019 349 views

The sun finally decided to come out today, so I tried to fit in a quick photo walk at one of the preserves near my house late this afternoon. It was getting dark and I was just about to call it quits for the day when I heard something rustling in the woods ahead and noticed three white-tailed deer.

They noticed me immediately, and I was worried I'd scare them off, but they must be used to people in the area because I was able to follow them while they walked and ate for about 20 minutes. The smallest one (#1 and 2) kept an eye on me the entire time.

After they had eaten for a bit, they all settled down on the ground like they were ready to sleep for the evening. What sweet, beautiful creatures.

Thank you! Yes, being so young, it was probably part curiosity and part responsibility. smile

Thank you! It was really nice of them to tolerate me so that I had some time to think about composition a little more than I usually can before I scare my subjects away. smile

Thank you! It is another experience I won't forget! It's really special being in the presence of such gentle animals. Made me think of your fawns from the summer. Have you seen them again?

in the winter they join with other families and i see a bunch of them walking way off in the woods, perhaps 6-8 of them together.. i'm hoping the mama & babies made it thru hunting season..

I hope so too! It's interesting that they seem to travel in bigger groups for winter, I've noticed that here too. It's rare to ever see them alone, but safety in numbers, I guess. smile

So sweet! I can see why "doe-eyed" became a common expression. smile

In more than one language even. In Dutch it would be "reeënogen" (or referring to the Disney movie "Bambi-ogen") smile
