Deconstructing Bouquets

by Bethany Plonski March. 03, 2019 354 views

Between the weather and busy season starting at work, it's been hard to get outside for photos lately. I've been trying to make the best of it by taking advantage of all the bargain bouquets left over in the grocery stores after Valentine's Day.

Believe it or not, all of these flowers came from the same oddball arrangement that I picked up for $5. It was fun to take it apart and rearrange it a little.

I've also been playing around a little with split toning in Lightroom. It's amazing how much it can change the feeling of a photo, but I still think I prefer natural colors in most situations.

Thank you! I love flowers, so it's easy to lapse into point and shoot thinking with them, but I've been trying to think a little bit more about composition when I work with them to keep things interesting. smile

Really great photos! How did you get that black background? Is that something you do post processing?

Thank you, I'm glad you like them! I don't have any actual backdrops to work with, so I took these in my dining room with the lights off and one small spot light aimed at the flowers. For camera settings, I used spot metering and dropped the exposure value to darken the background. In the raw version, the area around the flowers was pretty dark but not completely black, so I adjusted the shadows and blacks a bit in Lightroom too.

Thanks a lot for explaining! Nice to know it can be done without a lot of equipment :)

Glad to share! Photography can get really expensive, so I’m always happy when I can find a low-tech way to do something. smile

Thank you, Heike! I loved the shape and details on that flower, but I didn't know what kind it was. Had to look it up, it's called a football mum.

For $5 you got a deal. Not only some very nice flowers but some very nice shots. #4 is cool with split toning but I can see why the natural colors would be best.

Thank you! It was nice to have so much variety. I tried the blue/yellow split tones on all the images, but I only liked it on that one. It seems like that is a color combo that really pops sometimes and other times it just looks weird.

Thank you! It was a fun series, and I'm glad to have something to practice with while the weather is cruddy outside.

These are GORGEOUS Bethany!
I looked in our local store for discounted flowers to do the same, but either they were all sold, or they didn't discount them!

Thank you so much! There were a LOT of roses (still are, actually), but I've also had some luck finding big bouquets at one of the rinky-dink stores by our house. When I saw this one, I thought it was pretty strange as an ensemble, but it had too many interesting pieces to pass up. smile
