I've been trying to figure out panning...and as you can tell from the photo...I gave up. :) Stop-action shots are a challenge enough for this turtle right now.

Still a beautiful shot! I've never tried panning before but it sounds quite challenging :p
Keep trying, you'll get there eventually! smile

Thank you! Even when I'm disappointed with my shots, it still makes me happy to have the opportunity to photograph horses. But I do think I need to try panning again with a slightly more predictable subject. smile

Panning is a challenge. One thing that has helped me personally with the focus part is moving the focus button to the back button. It took me a moment to get use to using that but for 99% of my photography I find I use it now. Even after I got use to that part it I find panning a challenge I guess in part due to a lack of musscle memory. My rodeo shots I think I got 2 good ones out of about 200 shots I took during the barrel racing event.

Glad to know other people find it difficult too! I haven't tried back button focus yet, but it seems like a lot of people swear by it. Need to try it sometime! I'm hoping to get to a show with barrel racing sometime this summer too, but so far the scheduling has not been on my side.

Your issue there, Bethany, was your shutter speed.  Way too fast which caused your camera to freeze the action even though you were moving it.  Go down to something like 1/60 while doing your pan.  That'll keep the beautiful horse (which I especially like, by the way) in good focus while the background will get blur. I practiced this technique sitting on a bus stop bench and photoing cars as they drove by.  That gives you lots of chances to try different shutter speeds and panning technique until you perfect it.

Thanks, Bob! I wasn't actually panning for this particular shot, but I did try pretty much every shutter speed between 1/10 and 1/60 (and several different speeds of moving the camera) with pretty poor results. It looked like a drunk person had taken all those photos! smile I like the idea of practicing with cars - easy to find, and plenty of them, which is great for a technique that clearly requires a lot of fine tuning. Thank you for that suggestion!
