Less Sunny Sunflowers

by Bethany Plonski July. 29, 2019 300 views

I love the bright, cheerful colors of sunflowers, but they are pretty interesting in black and white too - just a different feeling.

Sometimes a little split toning goes a long way. For most black and white images, I like to go with blue tones for shadows and yellow for highlights, but for the last photo I thought the stark blue in the sky behind the flower might look interesting with a purple tint. It's pretty amazing how much you can change a photo by sliding some dials in an editing program.

Congratulations! Not only focusing but framing and retouching of all the shots are just eye-catching. The toning effect you tried here also works for me. Those pictures drive me to try the macro shots all of sudden. smile

Thank you for your kind comment! I appreciate your feedback very much. You are always inspiring me with your landscape photos, so I'm honored that this encouraged you to try macro shots! It was a real joy to spend the morning around all these beautiful flowers and think of different ways to photograph them. smile

Thank you! That was another one I overlooked the first few times I went through this set. I think that's why I like trying weird edits, because they make me look differently at photos I might otherwise skip over.

As much as I am a fan of color, these captures of your in B&W are really gorgeous. You are correct in saying that the B&W makes them more interesting. One tends to look at the structure of the petals and leaves and the all around shape when they are in B&W . Love the angles your chose for each shot. Very nice series.

Thank you so much! That is a really great observation about b/w, how it can shift the focus of the photo to structures and shapes. These are such great flowers for that too. I love their details.

Thank you! smile  Not sure what it is about the blue, maybe that it adds a vintage feel? Or makes the b/w seem a little less flat.

I love the sculptural spiky quality of the flower heads before they open and they work particularly well in b/w.

Thank you! They're almost eerie looking at that stage, probably my favorite growth phase to photograph.

Thank you so much! The family that owns this farm is very lucky to live surrounded by all these gorgeous flowers (and nice to share them with the public too).

Really nice set, Bethany. I love editing and agree with you, just little changes are often really surprisingly. Here #5 is my absolute fav, followed by  #7 + #3.

Thank you so much for letting me know which ones you like! smile #5 is one I completely overlooked the first two times I reviewed the photos. It's funny how I can completely miss things some days.
