Hello, Fall

by Bethany Plonski September. 23, 2019 335 views

Fall takes its time arriving in Georgia, so even though today is the autumn equinox, we still have a good month or so until the season really starts to show its colors. But every day there are subtle changes - a little bit of a breeze here and there, a slight drop-off in the humidity, and my favorite early sign of the cooler weather coming, misty mornings.

When I was editing this one, I tried a couple presets and found one that brought out the orange in the leaves. Presets feel a little like cheating to me, but in this case I like the added color.

And au naturel :)

Those smart presets brought autumn much earlier to you... we have very short autumn here in eastern Asia. You have to be very dilligent and careful to feel what the autumn is like. smile

Indeed, sometimes anticipation makes me impatient! smile The fact that fall seems to come and go so fast is the reason I like it so much, for reminding me to be watchful. Things change so fast, and they are beautiful while they change!

Nice post-processing.
It really looks like fall.

Thank you! I look forward to fall every year, so it was nice to imagine seeing it early while I continue to wait. :) Late summer has been very dry this year, so I’m not sure what kind of colors that will bring.

And with a preset the mood of the picture changes so much (for better I would say)

Thank you! I thought so too for this one. smile Fall colors have a nice peaceful feeling.

I like #1 and while it takes fall a bit longer to arrive that just means that when people are posting photos of bare trees we can add some color to the scenery :)

Thank you! That's a great way to look at it. Last year we had fall colors into December!

It is the only way I have learned to deal with it and not moan and groan about it because well if I were to be 100% I am a bit jealous of those living further north hehe.

i like the edit of #1 too.. and i don't mind edits and presets.. too often i see photos that i think need some editing.. like to straighten a horizon, or sharpen the blur out..
that's why we are given so many fun tools.. :)

Exactly, there are so many cool tools to use - it's a lot of fun to see what they can do! I like presets less when I have to use them as is, because sometimes they are a little more dramatic or change the photo more than I want them to. But in Lightroom you can use a preset and then edit the image even more, which is what I ended up doing here.

#1 looks warmer. Very nicely done. I never have any concerns with editing or using presets. smile I know that a lot of so called 'serious photografers' condemn editing, and they emphasize that again and again loudly in photo-forums (at least in Germany), but also in analogue times photos were retouched. So what... Hey and at least you make the photos  for yourself,  primarily they have to please you. grinning

Thanks, Heike! I see the value in getting things right in the camera first, but it can be really fun to see how different editing techniques transform photos. Especially for digital format, the sky is the limit with what you can do. smile

Good choice on the preset. The differences of before and after are dramatic and I like the after better. However, I get what you're saying about feeling like it's cheating. I used to think that but realized that I cannot get the results I want with the help. Thanks, Bethany, for the post.

Thank you, Greg! I think it depends a lot on the preset too - some of them introduce a lot more changes than what I think a particular photo needs, if that makes any sense. But it's amazing how the right one can transform an image!

The orange definitely makes the photo stand out more, peaceful and serene

Thank you! I agree, it's interesting when small changes can alter the mood of a photo.
