[me in the mirror]

[me in the mirror]

i think i'm one of the rare photographers that doesn't mind using themselves as a model.. it's certainly not a vanity thing, but more so stems from wanting to explore ideas and yet being a recluse..

as much as i dislike people on a superficial level, i love them on a mysterious what's inside level.. if i could photograph peoples darkest thoughts and oddest dreams.. their addictions and their traumas.. and i know i can't ever ask anyone else to pull the skin back and reveal their vulnerabilities without doing so myself..

so till i'm ready to shed my skin.. i will have to stick with myself..

NIce photo! It's something I struggle with, using myself as a subject. Which is exactly why I want to experiment with it! Stepping out of your comfort zone is the best way to grow as a person :)

Well done and well said Sherry!
I can agree with all comments and Bethany's theory as well.
However, I struggle with mirrors because I feel so young inside and the mirror doesn't reflect how I FEEL!
I shun the temptation to accept what the mirror is telling me that I should FEEL as old as I LOOK!
Some people buy into that lie prematurely.
With the amount of injuries, aches, and pains I have worked so hard to OVERCOME and rise above, I don't want to listen to the voice which wants me to succumb and believe that "I EARNED UGLY"!

i totally understand your thoughts Laurie.. i often say "i can't adult today".. when did i get so old? and it happened without me noticing..
i'm trying to get braver and show this side of me.. the wrinkles, the knotted fingers, the scars.. hell, me without makeup would be a feat.. [smile] i am using photoblog as my therapy.. :)

I love the edit and the comp on this photo. Being in front of the camera has never been my favorite thing . I would rather be behind the "safety" of the camera. I say all of the time I hate people and I dont think it is so much that I hate people I just don't deal with stupid well. I am the kind of person I am who I am take it or leave it but if you are talking about me you are leaving someone who might care alone. I am also one of those folks that it is what it is and it will work out just like it is suppose to as long as we do the footwork.

well said.. i don't really hate people, it just seems to sum it up in the least amount of words.. i dislike superficial people tho.. i never ask someone how they are, unless i really, really want to know.. and don't just tell me fine, or good.. tell me what you dreampt last night or how your body feels.. tell me if you're scared of the dark or why you hate the smell of roses.. ya know what i mean???

It's definitely a trend in photoblog, the mirror selfie...nicely done in monochrome

I love how you articulated this. I don't like being in pictures, but oddly enough I think that in itself is a form of vanity, because it's usually rooted in wanting to hold on to an idealized image of myself or to avoid seeing myself warts and all. I admire anyone who can let go of their vanity to explore in a playful way as you do.
And I can so relate to disliking people on a superficial level but loving them on a more abstract level! grinning Well said.

i am trying to step outside my preconceived notions of myself.. this photo doesn't portray it, but my thoughts were heading in that direction.. what i really want is to show my imperfections.. i'm not that brave yet, but i'm working up to it..
hell, i still never go a day without make-up.. perhaps there is some vanity to me.. hmmm..

as for people in general.. i always say "everyone has a story to tell".. not the pretty, frilly stories either.. but the stuff that keeps them up at night..

I like the edit and I like the angle and I like and like! Well done! My shedding my skin has come with getting older. I am at the I don't give a shit stage of life. You like me great, you don't like me great. I am old, ahh well can't change that ( although there are days when I look at myself and don't like what I see...but you know shit happens). Glad to see your face Sherry smile

C'mon you two, I'm sure I've mentioned this before in my posts!  "Getting Old" is not to be used anymore.  You both are simply accruing significant life experience.  Not as much as me, of course, but you're catching up.  Errr, I got some pixie dust so, yes, you're catching up.

heh.. when i feel the urge to use the "i'm getting older card" i will stop and think "what would Bob say?" ..
smile.. he'd call me out on it..

Weird how those glasses seem to change your whole face ... Anyway, you're apparently not the only PhotoBlogger who doesn't mind "shooting" her/himself (Camellia did too for todays theme, as did Russell), but I am indeed one of those many who do mind. I actually did a partial "selfie" today (very partial smile), but in any normal case I would only do that when I have put on an extra skin. A mask, an act, something that means extra protection from the outside world. Whatever ... good shot and good story with it.
