[summer nights]

[summer nights]

i don't welcome summer like most people do.. i don't care about social gatherings.. i don't swim, i don't play sports, i don't have much family left.. i'm a recluse with a solitary spirit.. summer to me is sitting around a fire in a lawn chair, holding the fellas hand.. it's barefoot dancing in the grass with a cocktail.. it's a leather bound journal and a fine tip pen.. it's sneaking up on deer in my woods.. it's seeing just how clear i can photograph the tiniest of bugs.. it's fireflies getting inside and blinking all over my bedroom at night.. it's cicadas shedding their skins and snakes warming themselves for a meal on the stone wall.. and often it's hiding away from the heat of day and waiting for the warm nights to venture out..

here's to my kind of summer!

That is the perfect way in my humble opinion to start off a summer or enjoy a summers eve. I am happy because this is the first year in ages that I have seen lightening bugs (fireflys) .

Growing up in South Texas, especially before modern air conditioning, was something to be endured more than enjoyed.... It started too early and lasted too long. Triple digits on the thermometer and 80-100% humidity makes for a pretty unpleasant ambiance for most activities, apart from being in the water of a swimming pool, lake, river or beach.....
What I do miss are the thunderstorms & fireflies, too! Here in the Northwest, we almost never see lightning or hear thunder or have violent weather........sigh.....Quite a change from where I lived, prior to the last fifteen years, namely: Tornado Alley of the Texas Panhandle. I moved there from South Texas on April 1. For six straight weeks we had a Tornado warning every single day!!!!!
Many trips to the storm shelter........Yikes!!!

Being a HAM radio operator (N5RAN), we used to chase the storms & report back to the airport weather folks about what we were seeing out in the field. I saw lots of heavy duty weather during that period of my life. Had to replace my house roof 3 times, lost my c-band satellite dish and had my vehicle beat up many times by huge hail stones!!!

that is fascinating.. i grew up on a Reserve and the native people believe the land is sacred.. and oddly enough, i've never known bad weather to pass thru there..
i've only seen hail a handful of times.. i'd pee my pants if i saw a tornado.. [snort]

Personally, I love to witness Mother Nature flexing her muscles. I miss going out to chase storms like I used to do, in Texas. Out where I am right now, I can't remember seeing lightning or hearing thunder more than a couple of times in the last 15-years!!!

As another "from Chicago" person, I agree with Lee.  I miss the fireflies.  I also miss thunder.  Here in California, the weather simply blows in from the Pacific.  There's no warm/cold fronts colliding.  Sigh . . .  But the good news for me, Sherry, is that I'm able to enforce my  most important weather rule:  "Snow shall not land within 200 hundred miles of me".  smile

no fireflies? no thunder? no snow?  i couldn't live without these seasonal highs.. yes, snow is a high.. my Canadian blood simply yearns for it..

Yeah, my Mother was the same way.  She wouldn't leave Chicago because she loved the change of seasons.  Some things just are not inherited.  grinning

at least you have fireflies!!! Summer for me is fireflies. Growing up in Chicago my favorite memories is running barefoot in the grass in the dark in our backyard chasing them. There's no fireflies here.
Do you think you might be able to capture them for me? That would be awesome
