[dag-day cicada]

[dag-day cicada]

i discovered him just as he was emerging, beginning his molt..

[cicada]

i love how the wings are accordion like.. he pumps fluid into them and they fill out..

the emerging process took about an hour.. then they sit in the sun, drying out for awhile.. i sat on my haunches for most of the hour watching.. i did walk around the tree, finding 7-8 more skins hanging abandoned.. and i found another cicada just crawling out of the dirt and up the trunk a foot or so.. so i got to watch another one begin his molt..

nature never fails to entertain me..

Incredible shots! I didn't realize cicadas were so colorful up close, like the blue in the wings in #3. Wow! Plus, there is something so cool about a creature that can literally climb out of its old self and leave it behind. Thanks for sharing these!

I used to have  a dog that liked to catch them and hold them gently in his mouth, while they buzzed furiously. He would always come to me, so I could hear it too. I think he thought it was funny and that I would too, which I always did......He was a "Canine Comedian"!

There was a time, we had an abundance of them, but now, nothing. Interesting macros.
