Queen Mary

Queen Mary

The Queen Mary is a timeless classic.

She was built in the 1930's by Cunard Lines and set sail on her maiden voyage on 5/27/36 from Southampton, England. She was the most elegant ship of her kind and hosted royalty, dignitaries and Hollywood stars from around the world.

In 1939 she docked in New York and was transformed into a WWII troopship. She was painted camouflaged grey and dubbed the "Grey Ghost". She was the largest and fastest troopship transporting 16,000 troops at 30 knots.

After WWII, it took nearly a year to return the Queen Mary to her former glory, but on 7/21/47 she resumed passenger service. She cruised the Atlantic for almost 2 decades before retiring on 12/9/67 in Long Beach, CA and becoming a floating hotel and event venue and is still considered a classic event location.

FYI - Being a true California girl my Jr/Sr. Prom was held on the Queen Mary.

Hello Lisa, enjoyed this post and found it interesting in a personal way. I was born in Pau, France where my father was sent during WWII. My mother was French. After the war, we came to the U.S.A. on the Queen Mary. Thanks for posting this!

My pleasure, Lisa!

Sorry to be so slow in responding...I'm not getting notifications when
someone I'm following posts a new image or replies to a comment I have
made on their blog.......so I have to work my way thru all the blogs I
follow to see if someone has replied to my comment....... or if they've
posted a new image.......sigh.......hopefully this glitch will be
rectified soon....
are you experiencing similar issues???

OH if you only knew - No I do not get my notifications. Well maybe a few every so often - just to tease me.
But I have not been able to post since the update on August 1.
I sooo miss not being able to post. I am so frustrated - trying to hang in there because I love the sight and all of the friends I have made, my photographs have grown and I don't want to give that up. I hope it gets fixed soon, because if I can't post- not much use to be on the site if I can't use it. I have decided to give it 30 days and then I have to make a decision, it just seems like 30 days is a long time to get it fixed, but we are already at 20 days so I am not sure how much hope I have, I thought maybe a week, 10 days max. Silly me!

Love it!  My grandfather was one of those service members transported on the Queen Mary during WWII.  I got to tour it when I was maybe 10 years old or so..it was really interesting.
