The Queen Mary is a timeless classic.
She was built in the 1930's by Cunard Lines and set sail on her maiden voyage on 5/27/36 from Southampton, England. She was the most elegant ship of her kind and hosted royalty, dignitaries and Hollywood stars from around the world.
In 1939 she docked in New York and was transformed into a WWII troopship. She was painted camouflaged grey and dubbed the "Grey Ghost". She was the largest and fastest troopship transporting 16,000 troops at 30 knots.
After WWII, it took nearly a year to return the Queen Mary to her former glory, but on 7/21/47 she resumed passenger service. She cruised the Atlantic for almost 2 decades before retiring on 12/9/67 in Long Beach, CA and becoming a floating hotel and event venue and is still considered a classic event location.
FYI - Being a true California girl my Jr/Sr. Prom was held on the Queen Mary.
