Day 146: Honoring The Past

For the last 9 or 10 Memorial Day weekends, an organization has flown in two restored World War II bombers - the B-17 and B-24 - to the airport about a mile from my parents' house. What makes it special is the fact that my grandfather (mom's dad) worked on the B-24 during the war (in the Pacific). He never really talked much about his experiences, so this is a nice way to at least see the fruits of his (and others') labor. Before he passed away, he came with my dad and I and we walked up close to and through the two planes, much as you see the people in the picture of the B-24 doing.

The coolest thing about the planes' visit each year is when they come in to land - they typically do a low-level fly by and then come back around to land. We parked at the end of the runway as we usually do to see it, but they somehow managed to sneak in this year. That's hard for those planes to do - they were definitely not stealth aircraft.

For a mere $500 or so, you can also take short flights in the planes - so we often hear them up and about, rumbling away.

It's a nice way to honor those who have served our country, and for those of us with a personal connection to the planes, it's even more special.
