Mass Observation Project: Meeting Places

An important “Meeting place” of sorts with a natural link to the previous theme of “Rubbish”. The Swedish Riksdagshuset (House of parliament).
In the 14th century Stockholm's first hospital and old folks home was situated on this little island.
When Gustav Vasa created the national state of Sweden in 1523, unifying it under a monarchy, he of course instated himself as that king and moved into the palace next door. He claimed the hospital stank and had it relocated to a spot outside the town and had a new stable built on the island for his horses and a gaggle of houses sprang up around it for his groupies and stable hands. At the end of the 19th century the island was cleared out for the new houses of parliament.
