On Setsubun (February 3),we threw dried soybeans to drive away evil spirits. “Devils out, fortune in !”

In big shrines and temples, celebrities ( eg. famous sumo wrestlers, TV stars, politicians ) were invited to throw beans. It is said that we will be happy if we catch them.

Afterwards, I ate the same number of soybeans as my age. How many beans did I eat ? (^^)

Many people gathered in Hikawa Shrine to catch soybeans (=the symbol of happiness) .

It was too dangerous to take photos.

This is very interesting!! I hope you did catch a lot of beans to have luck during all year.
Beans normally cause flatulence, so I hope bad spirits will not bother you :)))

funny title and odd tradition... are you sure it'll bring fortune when you eat the beans that are supposed to scare away the bad spirits?? ;-)

Interesting gathering. All these people trying to get what is thrown are like children... remembering that there is a child inside of each of us.
